Poyntzpass Primary School has officially launched its brand new farming club, “Poyntzpass Young Farmers’ Crew”, with its first meeting taking place on Tuesday 14th April. Supported by the Young Farmers’ Clubs of Ulster, the club will run over the next four weeks, giving pupils a hands-on introduction to agriculture. Activities will include trips to local farms and machinery visits, all building up to an exciting trip to Balmoral Show in May.
The new initiative aims to deepen pupils' understanding of rural life, the agri-food supply chain, and the wide range of careers available within the agricultural sector in Northern Ireland.
Roberta Simmons, Membership Development Manager for Young Farmers’ Clubs of Ulster said, “I was delighted to attend the inaugural session to introduce pupils to the work of the Young Farmers’ Clubs of Ulster. While official YFCU members begin at age 12, it is hoped this experience will inspire pupils to join their local club in the future and take advantage of opportunities in personal development, competition, and social activities”.
Mrs McAlister, Principal of Poyntzpass Primary School added ““Pupils of Poyntzpass PS approached me about starting an afterschool club focused on farming life, and we all agreed it was a fantastic idea. Being in the heart of a rural community, it is a natural interest for many of our pupils. We contacted the Young Farmers’ Clubs of Ulster, and without hesitation they offered their support and guidance.
A special mention goes to Roberta Simmons for her enthusiasm and ideas in helping shape the club. Our pupils even chose the name Poyntzpass Young Farmers' Crew! We now have an exciting programme planned over the coming weeks, including visits to local businesses and farms, whose owners have been incredibly welcoming.
Our pupils are privileged to experience rural life, and as a school we are committed to valuing the countryside way of living while investing in our future farmers. We hope Poyntzpass Young Farmers’ Crew goes from strength to strength.”
This new Farming Club represents a fantastic step in strengthening connections between education and the agricultural community, helping young people understand where their food comes from while inspiring the next generation of rural leaders.
