YFCU represented in Switzerland at European Rally
The Young Farmers’ Clubs of Ulster (YFCU) are pleased to send a small group of members to the European Rally, hosted by Rural Youth Europe, each year to represent the organisation and bring new knowledge and ideas back to Northern Ireland.
This year, the European Rally took place in Grisons, Switzerland from Saturday 15th to Saturday 22nd August 2026. The focus for the event was aimed at empowering young people to understand the impact of AI on society and how it can be used in a positive way to strengthen rural communities.
Representing YFCU were President Kristina Fleming (Ballywalter YFC), Jack Hunter (Moneymore YFC), Sophie Hawthorne (Collone YFC), Adrianna Coulter (Straid YFC) and Rebecca Cromie (Rathfriland YFC).
Having previously availed of a travel opportunity with YFCU and been on a short exchange trip to Scotland, Rebecca Cromie says the European Rally was a brilliant experience and one she will never forget. “I particularly enjoyed meeting new people from across Europe, and it was lovely spending time with fellow YFCU members; the experience definitely helped form new friendships and strengthen existing ones”.
The week-long event provided great opportunities for the members and strengthened their existing knowledge of Artificial Intelligence. A highlight of the week for Rebecca Cromie was the excursion day where she was able to see how businesses and farms in Switzerland are using AI in their everyday lives to enhance farming practices. “I really enjoyed living with my host family; to just experience what life is like in a completely different culture is something I will never take for granted”. Rebecca encourages fellow members to seek opportunities from the travel committee within YFCU, stating that they are trips of a lifetime.
Jack Hunter, member of Moneymore YFC described the trip as “‘a truly unforgettable experience and a real highlight of my time so far as a YFCU member. It was so much fun and was great to meet people from across Europe”.
Kristina Fleming (President) led the team this year and reflected on the trip as a powerful reminder of what happens when young people from rural backgrounds come together with a purpose. “Participating in Rural Youth Europe’s programme provided an invaluable opportunity to engage with rural leaders across Europe. The week offered learning, cultural exchange, and discussion on the challenges and opportunities facing rural youth. As President of YFCU, the networking and collaboration strengthened our international relationships and reinforced our commitment to ensuring our members are equipped, confident and Fit for the Future”, Kristina said. “The connections made, the conversations had, and the inspiration gained will stay with me for a long time. If you’re a member thinking about applying but you’re unsure, just do it! You gain far more than a week away. You build friendships with people who share your passion for rural life, you learn from different cultures and farming systems, and you grow in confidence without even realising it. It’s an experience that challenges you, inspires you and broadens your perspective in a way that stays with you long after you return home”.
YFCU wishes to thank Danske Bank for their continued support in sending members to the European Rally. The rural youth organisation was honoured to send Kristina, Jack, Sophie, Adrianna and Rebecca on the trip to represent the Young Farmers’ Clubs of Ulster.
