The Young Farmers’ Clubs of Ulster marked an important step forward with the launch of their 2026–2030 Strategic Plan. They were delighted to share the plan with Andrew Muir, Minister of Agriculture, Environment, and Rural Affairs, at the Balmoral Show on Wednesday 13th May 2026.

Following a positive discussion with Minister Muir at the Balmoral Show, Chief Executive Officer for the organisation, Derek Lough reflected on the opportunities ahead for the organisation and the wider sector.
“This plan sets out our commitment to digital transformation, widening participation and diversity, and addressing the key challenges facing young people in agriculture. In line with DAERA priorities, we are focused on strengthening the agriculture and food sectors through sustainable models that support rural economies, while also building strong, sustainable and diverse rural communities. As the leading rural youth organisation in Northern Ireland, we must listen carefully to what our members want to take away from the organisation. When I took up the role of CEO in September 2024, I launched a ‘95 Seconds to Help Shape the Next 95 Years’ survey to gain an understanding of what barriers may prevent young people from joining YFCU. The response was reassuring in that 97% of respondents would recommend YFCU to friends and family, however it highlighted that we compete in a busy space alongside youth, sports and faith-based organisations for young people’s time. It was this research that led us to develop our new strategic plan”.

Victoria Minford, Vice President, commented “I enjoyed the opportunity to discuss our recently published strategic plan with Minister Muir, delving into how we wish to take the organisation forward in the years to come, as well as some current issues young people are facing in the agricultural industry at the moment”.
