Young Farmers' Clubs of Ulster is delighted to announce the successful launch of three new school-based Farming Clubs at St Colman's High and Sixth Form College, Ballynahinch, Poyntzpass Primary School and Iveagh Primary School, Rathfriland.

The clubs have been established by the schools with support and assistance from YFCU. The aim is to introduce young people to agriculture, rural life and the many opportunities available within the agri-food industry. The initiative also seeks to strengthen links between schools and local Young Farmers' Clubs, helping to inspire the next generation of members and rural leaders.

At Poyntzpass Primary School, pupils have embarked on a four-week programme of activities, including local farm and machinery visits. The club has already generated significant enthusiasm among pupils, with members proudly attending Balmoral Show in their newly branded club clothing.

St Colman's High and Sixth Form College recently launched their club with support from Spa YFC. Roberta Simmons (Membership Development Manager with YFCU), was joined by Lucy Rodgers and Sarah Douglas (Spa YFC), who delivered presentations to students and highlighted the opportunities available through YFCU. While the club will operate independently within the school, it has established a valuable link with Spa YFC, with the hope that pupils will become involved in club activities, allowing them to enjoy the full range of educational, social and competitive opportunities available through YFCU. Iveagh Primary School is providing pupils with the opportunity to learn more about farming, food production and the agricultural industry through a range of engaging and educational activities.

The success continues to generate interest from schools across Northern Ireland. Most recently, YFCU visited Loreto College, Coleraine, where plans are underway for the launch of a new Farming Club in September. The club will provide students with opportunities to learn more about agriculture, food production, rural life and career pathways within the agri-food sector, while also building links with their local Young Farmers' Clubs in Coleraine. Through these clubs, YFCU can provide support, resources, guest speakers and practical learning experiences. Topics can include farm safety, field-to-fork education, environmental awareness, livestock, careers in agriculture and personal development.

Speaking about the recent club launches, Roberta Simmons (Membership Development Manager) said, “These new Farming Clubs are a fantastic example of schools recognising the value of agricultural education and providing opportunities for young people to learn more about the industry. It has been wonderful to see the enthusiasm from pupils and teachers. Through these clubs, pupils gain a greater understanding of where their food comes from, the importance of agriculture to our local economy and the wide range of careers available within the sector. They also provide a pathway for young people to connect with their local YFCU clubs, and we hope many of these pupils will continue their journey by becoming active YFCU members in the years ahead."
