Members of the Young Farmers' Clubs of Ulster (YFCU) Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (AERA) Committee recently attended two informative meetings, providing valuable insight into agricultural innovation, nutrition and diversification across Northern Ireland.

The first meeting welcomed Lauren McKeown, Ruminant Nutritionist at Fane Valley Feeds, who delivered an engaging presentation on animal nutrition, feed development and the technical support services available to farmers. During the session, Lauren outlined the role of the technical team in supporting livestock enterprises through services such as forage analysis, tailored feeding solutions, grass measuring, financial monitoring and feed efficiency assessments. She also highlighted the company's focus on innovation and product development, including the introduction of Gain-X, a feed additive designed to improve feed efficiency and daily liveweight gains.

Committee members gained insight into how scientific nutrition and on farm monitoring can help improve livestock performance, profitability and sustainability, while also learning about the ongoing research and trial work being carried out by Fane Valley Feeds.

At a separate meeting, the committee visited Blackiston Houston Estate, where members were hosted by Jack Blackiston-Houston.  Jack provided a tour of the estate's anaerobic digestion plant, explaining how technology contributes to renewable energy production and the wider operation of the estate. Members also received an update on the diverse range of enterprises and activities taking place across the estate.  The visit offered a practical demonstration of how modern farming businesses can successfully integrate innovation, sustainability and diversification to enhance long-term resilience.

Speaking following the meetings, YFCU AERA Committee Chairperson, Harry Chambers said: "These meetings provided an excellent opportunity for committee members to learn about developments taking place across the agriculture industry. We would like to thank Lauren McKeown and Fane Valley Feeds for sharing their expertise, and Jack Blackiston-Houston for hosting us at the estate and providing such an insightful tour. Both meetings highlighted the innovation and forward-thinking approaches helping to shape the future of agriculture."

The AERA Committee extends their sincere thanks to all those involved in hosting and contributing to both events.
